Hi!

my disco is in need of new tyres. I have done some research and i ended up with 2 tyres, Grabber AT2 and BFG MT.

those packages are quite expensive, so i like to ask an question:

how big is difference in noise levels?

anybody have any experience of AT2? (BFG is well known tyre...!)

how crazy im gona be with commuting 40 miles a day with MT's? :)

thanks for any oppinions. (and yes i did use "search" but AT2 's are not that common)

If you off road more than once a month, go with MT...if you dont...go with AT...most go with MT because they are sometimes better offroad, but if you are drivin that much each day, it would be better to roll with the AT...that is just my opinion...

Hello there.

Idrive a d1 with 245 BFG a/t tyres. IMHO the best for 80% tar and 20 % offroad. They performed flawlessly offroad so far, and at least give you reasonable grip on wet tarmac.

I commute about the same, and have BFG MTs on my DD. Love 'em,, very smooth ride compared to more aggressive off-road tires.

I agree with NHESS81,,, go with the MTs if you are going to be off-road more than once in a blue moon,,, especially as (I assume) you are in the UK. The BFG ATs are amazing tires, but they are horrible in mud & donut quickly, becoming useless.

I run 265/70r16 General Grabber AT2 with an Old Man Emu 2 inch lift, and can say that they are very, very quiet on the road. Unfortunitely, I cannot comment on how they do off-road. Haven't had time to try them yet. They do however perform very well in snow conditions.

Tread is similar than BFG A/T, except that the tread knobs are a little more open which would mean better in muddy condition than the BF A/T. Tread also goes up on the sidewall, and most of all, the AT2 is approx. half the price of the B.F.G A/T.

Steph, agree totally!

I run 265/55 Grabber AT2's. For my research, the best price for BFG AT's was $160 versus the $93 for the AT2's. Research also showed the Grabbers out performing the BFG's in ALL catagories, especially the mud/snow clearing, and wet traction and customer satisfaction. (for light truck all terrain, BFG's ranked 8th, AT2's 3rd in one particular poll) Scientifically, I'm sure the compounds are different, ect... but check out the tread pattern comparison!!

Now at that price comparison, I could run two sets of AT2's giving me fresh tread 1/2 way through if the BFG's out lasted, which seems to be the rumor... I'll find out! Plus for the snow freaks, the AT2's are stud capable where as the BFG AT's are not...

I've got a set of BFG MT's in 235/70......245/70 is also a easyfit with no cutting etc on a standard D1......mine has a 2" spring lift ........I also have 235/70 Michelin XPC's and the BFG MT's are a good comparison in the dry on sealed roads/highway at speed BUT not so good in wet on roads as the excellent XPC's, but OK if you drive with care on wet roads!, but BFG MT's are way superior off road in ALL conditions - almost unstoppable!........go for the BFG MT's - you wont regret them if you can only have 1 saet of tyres for your Disco!!!!

Hi Erik!

Grabebr AT2's work just fine! I done now about 7500 miles with them, summer, offroad, onroad and now 3 weeks of snow&ice, down to 14F (-10C)

Only thing i miss is studs/spikes when icy road! In the snow, muddy snow and sanded roads are ok, but watch out when ice only! no problems when driving or starting, HUGE problems to STOP! :) i guess all the tyres without studs/spikes have same issues!

i was positivelly surprised of low roadnoise they make, i had previously Continental contitrack SUV's and they were allmost as noisy as AT2's!

good allround tyre, not best on anything but OK for me. (not hard core offroader). No sign of wear what so ever.....! i do probably get some offroad tyres to next season. i have an extra pair of rims so...! ;)

please ask if you wonder of something!
