Looked at a 2004 DII SE7 the other day. Had 64,000 miles on it and it looked beautiful on the outside. The interior was in great shape, but the drivers seat and interior driver door panel looked like it had a lot more wear than a truck with 64k should have. There was small hole in the seat, and there were a couple of cracks in the door panel.

This was at a used foreign car dealer and repair shop, and the first thing the guy says to me was that he was THE land rover guy in the area, and he's been dealing with LR's for years, knows them like the back of his hand etc.... I open up the cargo area and am trying to get the jump seats down, but I couldn't figure it out, I ask the LR expert, and guess what, he couldn't figure it out either. Now I got my radar up. I start the car,and pop the hood, and I could smell coolant. The expansion tank was very, very low, almost empty.

I took it for a drive, and it drove great, shifted great, felt really good. My wife took it for a drive, and I noticed that one reverse light was not working, and one brake light was not working.

I gave the guy the keys back, and told him the problems, and he of course was puzzled. Asked me if I thought I was smelling tire dressing and not coolant. Told me he would do some tests, and that anything can be fixed if I want the car.

He's asking $13,995.

Any thoughts?

Coolant smell prob throttle body heater or intake gasket. Was the coolant green or orange and was it clean?

To get the seats to swing out you have to twist the black handles on the seats, they will unlock from the side, swing over and lock down, then you can pop up the seat backs. If you look at the black plastic that runs up and down you'll notice there is part of it about 5 inches long that twists, that's what unlocks them.

I'd guess he is about 6 to 7k more than I'd be willing to pay for it. My 99 has 110k miles and no seat holes, but they are age cracked.

Doug, i bought my 04 S for about $8500 a year ago. It also had no issues that needed to be "fixed" before the sale. Prices seemed higher down here in Atlanta at the time, but i kept looking and found a clean truck for a fair price. $13-$16k seemed what dealers/car lots were all asking at the time. Keep looking, one will pop up.

sounds like it was overheated and lost coolant and refilled with green coolant.

I doubt I would touch it, these are risky enough as they stand off the assembly line.

a) nothing wrong with green except that D2 came with orange coolant and the two cannot be mixed. If it was not correctly and completely flushed you will have problems.

some people think you can just put any coolant together, these engines have enough cooling issues on their own

In April 2008 I paid $13,500 for my 2004 S model with 49,800 on the odometer and another 100K miles of full powertrain warranty.

My throttle body heater has been a chronic leaker and is leaking as I type. I have to add about a pint of coolant/water every week or so. Shitty design, chronic leaker.

i bought mine in 06 I think it was, under 17 with 20k miles. These things fluctuate in value depending on market conditions as well as regionally, very drastically.
