Everything and nothing depending on which rover you end up with. Mine has been a great ride (Yes I am knocking on wood right now) But others have problems probably no different than anyother make. They are easy to work on and have a fairly large after market. Oil leaks, some electrical issues, poor fuel economy when lifted. its hard to say their not reliable when the stats show 75% of rovers built are still on the road. Or you hear about the guy who has 390k on his rover. Take the plunge just do your home work before you buy. ;)

If ypur thinking of buying a Discovery you DO need help!
What year are you looking for and what do you want to do with it? Parts can be expensive if you don't shop around any. You can also knock down expenses by doing your own work. Look for something with a service record if possible.

I think alot of Rover ownership comes down to how much you love cars in general and Rovers specifically. If you enjoy wrenching or have some $$$ (or extended warranty) then you should be fine. If you just want a Rover to have one and don't care about learning more about the car, then you might want to look elsewhere because you could get frustrated. I have had few problems (knocking on wood) but at the same time they take a bit of extra care than my past vehicles, if you are keeping them long term. Good luck.

IMO the big issue is buying used without getting burned. We have two, no major problems outside of the ones we were aware of when we bought them. It helps A LOT if you can wrench yourself, get a manual or disc.
Having a daily driver is a huge bonus, but I am lucky in that respect.
Things that take a crapper on these trucks
electronic issues, not always easy to diagnose.
drivetrain, if you wheel it very agressively.
leaks, leaks, leaks. What do they call a Rover that does not leak?

empty... :D

looking at a 96 or above. I've also been looking around at the jeep grand cherokee which i would believe since it is domestic they have an abundance of more parts that are easier to get my hands on for cheaper and i can save money also because they are a bit cheaper in cost then the discoveries. I'm looking for a little bit of offroading ive been up to paragon in the pocanos with my neighbor his dad has an h1 and he has a d-90 i enjoyed it a lot so i would like to go up there with a car of my own and try it. But i also would use it for just general commuting i can fit more people in them then my talon because if you know talons/eclipse the rear leg room is hardly existant. Thanks for your help im down to two choices the grand cherokee and the discovery

Stay away from a Land Rover.

If you do buy one, welcome friend!

But seriously, as Walter said, bu one with a service record, from a soccer mom if you can.

Stay far away, but seriously, welcome. Got it? Good.

Some might say that unwittingly, the title to this thread says it all. Me, I love my Disco, but it has been towed more than once and I'll love it less after the warranty expires. Good luck, they sure are fun vehicles.

KJ, not conflicted ;)

It also depends on how much are you willing to spend in the purchase, then you'll most likely have to replace some parts, but instead of replacing you are most likely to "upgrade" those parts, wich will make necesary to upgrade some other parts...
Me for instance, I love my Disco (it's a 96) but I don't have enough money to do all the upgrades that I would like, but i'm saving for them, so for me is a long term project, check your pockets and decide.

Want a reliable car that is good for trips and commuting? Look elsewhere.

Want something that you will most likely end up falling in love with and looking for a new hobby? Get the rover!

It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.. if you want to go cheap with it, then you better be able to do all the work on it your own.. if you have some money to spend, then you can get a newer/less problematic one and have a dealership/indy mechanic do the big work while you learn the smaller things.
