History:
Land Rover and Camel Trophy have been partners for 18 years. The LR Discovery has been from 1990 - 1997 the official trophy vehicle. In April 1999 LAND ROVER and WBI announced the end of the partnership.
"The event has played a major role in sustaining the image of Land Rover as the manufacturer of the best 4 x 4 s in the world" (Marketing director Rover Group)
Most of the Cars were used for the national selection events after surviving the Camel trophy. After that they were sold to private enthusiasts.
About 450 Camel Trophy vehicles were built during these years. In Europe the are Camel Trophy Clubs which try to keep these cars in a good conditions. These groups try to sort out the fakes.
In Germany and the U.K. are a large number of these Camel Discos still on the road.
There was a special edition of the Discovery in 1999. It was called "Camel Trophy Edition." But it only looks like a Camel vehicle at the first glance.
Information:
The special equipment for the Camel trophy Discoverys was supplied by a small company called MANTEC, which still produces stuff for Land Rovers.
