Cold start this morning.. oil pressure gauge starts to move after one second and on 44 psi after 3 seconds .
Now it is much warmer, like 62f so this data point does not mean al that much..
I can hear the lifters tick slightly the first second and then become quiet.
Not sure if I ever heard them before but maybe after messing with this for awhile my ears are more scared of noises coming from this engine.

Reading this closely all along BECAUSE I TICK when first started cold after a day.. Bad lifter I'm sure.. but, I run a FRAM filter and after reading everything thats a bad thing for start up oil pressure??

Am I getting that correctly that a WIX filter did the most good for startup pressures?

Kris, I think one should start with a oil pressure gauge to know what is happening.

In my case the oil pressure was low and as far as I can tell because of an old oil pressure relief spring.

After reading the longest oil pressure thread my recollection is that the cold oil cannot flow fast thru the filter. The oil has to bypass the filter so the bypass valve pressure inside the filter has to be as low as possible.
The wix filter I choose has a low bypass setting and is also larger so that the internal resistance is lower.

So for my situation the main issue o think was the relief spring setting..
The larger filter helps a bit as well.

Good luck,
Johan

Took it for a drive ,outside temp around 65f. Immediate pressure on starttup, climbs to 42psi within 3 seconds.
Climbed a 11 % mountain for about 1 mile, went down and up again.
Oil pressure at idle 14psi climbs to 30psi at 1500rpm. Does not go above 40 psi at any rpm once hot.

Oil pressure drops with 4psi when accelerating and increases again when letting go of the throttle. I assume my crankshaft moves forward and backward a bit, maybe because of the manual clutch has worn the axial bearing a bit??

Either way installing and oil pressure gauge gives valuable information.
