Advice for work to do while the engine is out

I didn't bother repairing my SAI because they were scrapping E-tests this spring. When I undid the nuts on the SAI flex pipes they crumbled so I put the nuts back on with a coin under them to fill the hole. A bit of high temp sealant on the underside and it hasn't leaked in the 6 months since I...

XYZ switch or Crank Position Sensor?

Although the battery was fairly new, that and charging were the first thing I checked, along with grounds. I still need to look at roverovers suggestion of the fusebox but the kid has it to go to work tonight. The only twist I don't get is the limp home mode I got with all the transmission...

XYZ switch or Crank Position Sensor?

Started the crank sensor, got it in relatively easy after dropping the exhaust which was made easy by a recent head gasket job. I think 80% or more of the job is the god damn connector. This should be considered a mandatory job while heads are off, it would have been a piece of cake then...

XYZ switch or Crank Position Sensor?

Yeah, I was just going to take it apart and clean the contacts, if I do have to do it in the future at least 3/4 of the fasteners will be easy.

XYZ switch or Crank Position Sensor?

Thanks for the tips, I ordered a crank sensor but won't have it until Tuesday and started on the XYZ switch but had to back out because the front bolt was going to break if I tried any harder. I'll let the penetrating oil soak in and have another go on Tuesday when I do the CKP. It took forever...

XYZ switch or Crank Position Sensor?

Symptoms; I replaced all plugs last fall when I did head gaskets but reused the Magnecor wires that had been on for several years as I hadn't had any problems. A couple of days ago I stopped on the way home and after only about a minute it wouldn't restart. After a couple of tries it caught and...

trick to replacing heated windscreen relay?

Can't help with the relay question, but I have 2 D2's with heated windscreens. One is cracked across the bottom where the PO let the wiper arm snap down without a blade. That one defrosts like a picket fence. The other one is cracked along the top and doesn't suffer such issues. I got a price...

D1 Kalahari / Saudi grill repair?

I have used a product called Plastex to repair plastic motorcycle fairings with great success. V groove the back half way through and put clear packing tape on the front and you won't need to paint it.

Leaking Brake Master Cylinder On Discovery Series II

Pretty straight forward, but you can't buy the seals separately, you have to get the whole reservoir. IIRC it took a surprising amount of pressure on the reservoir to compress the new seals enough to get the retaining clip back in.

    Knocking sound

I had a bad driveline vibration when I first got mine, it was 3 years old, around 100,000km. It was okay under load but quite bad neutral throttle (no load), accel or decel and it went away, most pronounced at highway speeds. It turned out the front diff pinion nut had backed off, re-tourqued it...

Looking for input/opinions on thining the heard.

You don't say where you are but the effects of nature (and road salt) can't be any worse on a D2 frame than in Southern Ontario. I've had an '04 D2 for 10 years and just bought another identical one for parts, which is my daily driver at the moment. My original one has a rust hole in the frame...

6-Wheel Drive Discovery II - Am I totally mad ?

A troubleshooting suggestion if your vibration returns, you can mount a GoPro almost anywhere. I have used them to track down problems in complex industrial automation equipment that you otherwise can't get close to when it is running.

    Willys CJ5 vs SIIa

I've got an M38 flat fender and matching M100 trailer awaiting restoration, previously owned an M38A1 which was fun at the time, it was my daily driver in university. Definitely not suited to long trips, although a Saturn (Warn) overdrive will help. The later M38A1's (A2's?) had the front spring...

A Defender and a VW Thing had a hipster baby

It should have the batteries in 2 equal banks, when the first one runs out you know you can switch over and more or less make it back to where you started.
