Front half-shafts and hubs are certainly getting pricey. IME you don't need an iX. My brother and I made it back from Detroit in the blizzard of '96 through 10" of snow in his Blizzak-shod 325e with very little drama. It is a wonderfully balanced car and completely predictable when it gets slick.
