P38 Air Conditioner; chasing problems for 3 weeks

Thanks everyone. It turns out that the cause was too much oil. The brand new Sanden 4916 compressor came preloaded with oil. My mechanic goofed and did not blow all the oil out. We blew out excess oil (which was in pristine condition with no metal bits), and now the a/c system runs perfectly. I...

P38 Air Conditioner; chasing problems for 3 weeks

The compressor clutch stopped engaging on my 1996 4.6HSE, so I bought a new Sanden 4916 compresser and installed it along with receiver/drier #1. I started hearing a brief but strong vibration noise each time the new compressor clutch engaged. I traced the noise to the compressor to condenser...

P38 Rear Brakes are NOT doing any braking!! Help

Hi everybody, I am stuck. . .I just replaced front rotors and brake pads which had gone metal to metal. I noticed that the rear rotors actually had rust pits on them. using a pyrometor i measured temps of 150 degrees F on front rotors and only 60 degrees F on the rear rotors after normal...

HELP! Coolant leaking from BRAND NEW head gaskets

Thanks for the good info. Yes, I did read up on the intake manifold before installation, and I did seal the 4 intake ports you mentioned. However, I cannot see any leaks from intake. One leak appears to be sweeping down the block just under the head in front of cylinder #1. the block is wet...

HELP! Coolant leaking from BRAND NEW head gaskets

1996 4.6 228k miles. I finally got around to replacing head gaskets that were leaking to outside of block, most at front of cylinder #1, for the last 100k miles. Now that the new head gaskets are installed, they are still leaking at the same places!!! i.e. front of #1 and rear of #7 and front of...

p38 Composite or Metal Head Gaskets. . .???

PM, thanks for the smart ass response, but no the "cause" of the difficult hot restart has not been identified. I am guessing that it might be related to the leaky head gasket, since i have renewed so many parts. if you can contribute information that would be helpful in determining the cause I...

p38 Composite or Metal Head Gaskets. . .???

PT, Thanks very much for your letting me know your confidence and experience with composite head gaskets and stretchy head bolts. That's what I wanted to hear. Is there a factory spec for resurfacing the heads to compensate for the thicker composite head gasket? or should I just let my machinist...

p38 Composite or Metal Head Gaskets. . .???

Um sorry about the black text. I just copied and pasted from unformatted text. Not sure why this bulletin board would default to black on black. I'll make a note of it. Thanks.

p38 Composite or Metal Head Gaskets. . .???

Luckily, i have not had any mixing. . . only leaking coolant to the outside at #1 and #7. So you are a fan of composites. That’s great. That’s what I’ve purchased and my machinist is ready to surface to heads to maintain compression ratio. Do you have any opinions on studs versus stretchy head...

p38 Composite or Metal Head Gaskets. . .???

Ok I know it's a well worn topic, but i'm due for head gaskets and i'm looking for advice as to whether to use composite or metal head gaskets. Now that a few years have gone by does anybody have any bad experience with composite gaskets? I?m leaning toward going composite with studs instead of...

    1996 p38 won't rev over 1400 rpm -- cuts out

Ok so I found the problem. . .the flex plate ate shit and chewed up the rivets on the reluctor ring on the flywheel, which loosened the cheesy stamped sheet metal reluctor ring, which, in its new damaged form, rotated in an arc rather than a circle and struck the crankshaft position sensor's...

    1996 p38 won't rev over 1400 rpm -- cuts out

Can you explain how to test whether a MAFS is working properly? (other than swapping out another known good, but $500 MAFS)

    1996 p38 won't rev over 1400 rpm -- cuts out

Hi, This is a Hail Mary. Does anybody have a good guess as to why my 1996 4.6 hse won't rev over 1400rpm? I would really appreciate any troubleshooting help. . .I am in rental car. . .and this is getting expensive. . .except for the fuel I'm saving. . . I have: 1. engine idles smoothly...

    96 P38A Condenser Replacement

Guys, Thanks to all for the replies about the bumper removal. I actually ended up removing the bumper. It is quite easy and only takes a few minutes. It's so easier that I plan to remove the bumper to detail the paint from now on. . .piece of cake. Tom
