My 99 DII has a chirping sound that I can hear coming from somewhere outside the vehicle. It is speed related and is driving me nuts. I tried putting the vehicle on jack stands to replicate the noise but had no luck. The noise is there when the vehicle is on the ground. I made sure all my u-joints and drive lines were greased. Any ideas?

Double ditto, chirping is a very description of one preparing to take a huge poo. Mine sounded just like that and I barely realized what the noise was before the u-joint exploded.

I hope that's not it. I just had it rebuilt less than 10k ago. What's the best way to test it. I grease it during every oil change.

who did the rebuild? I have seen brand new u-joints go bad in no time because the person that replaced them damaged the bearings when replacing the u-joint.

I had a drive line shop replace them. Also they were the serviceable ones. I also used the Neapco joints.

When you had it rebuilt, did they replace the stock u-joints with serviceable??
By chance is the heater on when you have these sounds?

I would have them look it over right away...even a guy that does it alot can mess one up from time to time.
worst case you eliminate the chance for the catostrophic failure

Can I pull the front drive line out and drive it to see if it eliminates the noise?

So I pulled the front driveline and drove it around. The noise went away. I called the driveline shop that rebuilt it and they had me bring it out to them. They said everything looked fine but wanted me to leave it with them for awhile. When I went to pick it up they said they greased it up and rechecked everything. They thought that one of the caps was starting to go dry and that what was causing the chirping noise. I reinstalled it and the noise is gone
I guess I need to pay more attention next time I grease it. They mentioned that sometimes the grease isn't distributed evenly and to make sure that it is coming out all of the caps when greasing it.

Most likely the ujoint my vote as well BUT idler, altenator and water pumps bearing can let out the chirp too.........put a long screwdriver on em and listen at idle just to be sure and wheel bearings can chirp....THEN... as MUSKYMAN has graciously and nicely suggested others in the past...take a step back and kick yourself in the balls...........................[sorry MUSKYMAN but just had to add that]

If it was dry enough to be squeaking [metal to metal]....it was very likely damaged...not cheap to find out....change it!
