Default Serpentine belt tensioner

I took advantage of the summertime weather over the weekend to do some chores on the Disco, like replace the brake ECU and find out where the grumbling was coming from at the front of the engine. The power steering pump has shut up for the time being. It's nice to see that the threat of mechanical mayhem still works as a repair deterrent.

Anyway, with a stethoscope, I couldn't tell is the noise was coming from the air con compressor or the belt tensioner. So I slipped off the belt to give both a spin by hand. The belt tensioner idler wheel wobbled though a 20-30 degree arc. Problem found.

While I have ordered a new one, I hate to throw *anything* away that may have some residual value. While the tensioning mechanism works fine, has anyone replaced just the bearing in the idler wheel? If you have, how about a part number?

Cheers

the bearing does come out, but damn that lilttle retainer clip to hell.
6203-2rsj from napa or whoever, just make sure the brg is sealed with a rubber dust cover , dont use the the ones with the steel . they suck.

Default Bearing replacement

Thanks - the operative number here is 6203 which will cross over to other bearing manufacturers like NTN. Just be sure to get one with a 17mm arbor. And sealed.

The folks at the bearing supply place said this is the most common, small bearing in the world. $6.23 sure beats $191....

i got the bearing off and pressed the new bearing in using a vice. you have to remove the retaining clip first and it comes out that way.

reinstalled the serpentine belt tensioner idler wheel and the new serpentine belt. no more noise when the truck starts!!

this is a very quick and easy fix, the part number for the bearing from napa is correct: 6203-2rsj ($6.84)

the (1995 discovery) serpentine belt part number you are looking for from napa is: 25-070890 ($39.65) this is a 'gates' brand belt, which was cross-referenced from the 'dayco 5070890' part number found on rangerovers.net -- ** make sure you ask for the napa part number above, rather than asking for a serpentine belt for a 1995 discovery because they will give you a different part number (gates 25-070885) which costs $65.00 !!

the install is very straight forward, you don't have to remove the fan. i couldn't find any directions using the search, but figured it out on my own. basically, all you have to do is use a 15mm wrench to hold the tensioner down (as if you were tightening it.. clockwise) while you slip the belt off. if you are changing the bearing in the belt tensioner idler wheel you should use a vice to remove the old bearing and press the new one in straight. to put the belt back on you should either draw out a belt routing diagram or print one out from online. to put the belt back on, again, hold the tensioner down and slip the belt over the alternator pulley above... all done! your truck should be quiet from now on upon startup, unless something else is going bad. good luck.

I went to Napa and they gave me Part# 25-070885. I haven't installed it yet. What's the difference? Is it only the price? The counter guy told me that it was a "Gate's" brand, and that it had 7 grooves.

Why should I exchange it?

Well, the bearings in the tensioner and idler are in face different on a 2003 and I don't know about getting those snap rings out there's only about half a mm visible and I couldn't even budge it.
